Wheel spindle

Post by BarrieSteel »

Ariel 1949 ng 350 my front wheel spindle seems a bit short, I believe the forks were widened this year, because the spindle nut only covers half the threads.Did inquire about a replacement, but is the same length, seems like one size is avaliable, spindle length of mine is 8 ,1/2 inches long not sure if this is the longer one? ,any thoughts would be great Barrie.

The earlier fork legs were on 7"3/8 centres while the later legs were
on 7"5/8 centres.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able find a known later spindle and measure
its length.

The new late spindle I have is 8.633" long so probably meant to be 8 5/8". The old and battered short type I have is 8.353" long so probably meant to be 8 3/8" long but it has been hit on the left (drive side) end with a hammer and this end is counterbored for some distance which may well account for the shortening.

Hi Paul and Will, thanks for the replys. The fork centres are 7"5/8 so spindle length I need would be i believe 8"3/4 later type.Mine is 8"1/2 new one, If anyone has one forsale that would be of great help.

Your spindle is only 1/8" too short and I rather suspect that your problem is more
to do with the way the bearing is fitted into the brake side of the hub. A short
spindle in a wide set of forks fits properly at the nut end but nearly disappears
into the fork leg at the non-brake side.

Hi Will, see what mean looks ok in the bearing area, are the shoulders on the spindle that buts up to bearing brake side are the same length to both spindles types.

I've finally found the spindle box. I agree with Paul about the length: 8"5/8.
The thread is more-or-less 11/16" long and from the outside to the shoulder
is 2"7/8.

With regards to what happens inside a front hub it's worth reading the
following from Draganfly's website:

Hi Will,Thanks for you efforts on this subject , thread length is ok, end of spindle to shoulder is 2" 5/8, 1/4 inch shorter than yours. Full length is 8"1/2 yours is 1/8 longer. This must be the issue,Thanks for Drags info interesting. Barrie
