Re: 1954 NH first proper shake down rides
On regular oil, after about 1200 miles, my KH showed no sign of running in on the bores. Within about 300 miles of using running-in oil, the smoking had gone. It was the technical people at Morris Oils who told me what to do and experience since suggests they were absolutely right.

Re: 1954 NH first proper shake down rides
I thought the clutch was slipping on my NH following reassembly after fitting a new gearbox sprocket. New composite friction plates made no difference; the problem went away when I increased the tension on the shock absorber spring. The give away clue was the slip occurring under the same load conditions before and after fitting the new friction plates.

Re: 1954 NH first proper shake down rides
I've always done the shock absorber spring dead tight.
Without the spring in place but with its retainer up against
the shoulder on the mainshaft it shouldn't be possible to
turn the sprocket completely round on the mainshaft.
If you can then either the cam or sprocket or both are badly
worn or you have the later, longer mainshaft from a 1956 on
engine.

Re: 1954 NH first proper shake down rides
I had this transmission slip problem with my '57 NH after refitting the primary drive and clutch. Problem went away after increasing the tension on the shock absorber spring.

Thanks. I‘ll have a look at the shock absorber as well. Unfortunately it will be a few weeks until I can get back to work on the bike and be able to report back.
