Steve:
That looks a bit different to the ones I've seen that use a (steel) Mini backplate inside the Ariel original. Looks like yours has an inner alloy plate.

How is it fixed to the Ariel outer to stop it rotating?

It is pretty much identical to mine. It has an alloy backplate, held on by a 1/4 bolt which threads in to the spot where the return spring would locate on a standard brake plate, and the stud for the torque arm is removed and replaced with a countersunk screw which is threaded from the inside out wedging the plate in place.

As you will see if you look at the Hydraulic and Original Photo it is an alloy plate through bolted in place of the the cam lever arm and the adjusting wedge screw, the cylinders are bolted to the alloy plate with the fluid inlet in place of the cable anchor, pipe work distributes to the cylinders in side the plate with a bleed point in a new hole bored near the brake plate anchor position, I guess the cylinders are Mini and min-tex shoes.

HYDRAULIC BRAKE OVERHAUL
Thought I would post a few details of the brake overhaul, pretty straight forward job the only difficult part was removing the countersunk slot set screw which through bolts to replace the anchor arm stud, repeated warming of the plate and heating the set screw got it out with the help of two nuts locked on and mole grips, it just needed the thread dressing up and a new slot filed to re-use it,new cylinders and brake shoes obtained, the mounting plate and the cylinders needing a small amount of filing to line up,the shoe only needing a small amount of dressing up with a file and an edge chamfer to get free rotation.
PARTS LIST
EBC 5145 MINI FRONT SHOE SET (4 SHOES) £7.99 + £5.50 PP E-BAY
GWC127 LH MINI NEARSIDE CYLINDERS £13.90 THE PAIR + £3.95 PP
So a cheap and easy overhaul.
Cheers, Steve.

Thought I would update the post for info if any one is overhauling one, as it's been a long haul getting this one to work well, fluid retention being the main problem but I have cracked it now, it was hard to bleed easily as the nipple was in-board of the brake plate and on the last bleed fluid leaked from the nipple unseen and destroyed the shoes I have now fitted a nipple extension and what a difference! (see Pics) I now have a very effective front anchor and no leaks.
