1948 Square Four and 1920's sidecar JYF 27

Post by robjameson »

This is a bike my dad sold in about 2001 and from the vehicle check it hasn't been taxed since which is a shame. It is the first Ariel I rode and the bike I learned to ride a combination on.

I would love to find out where it has ended up.

Cheers

Update:

I had posted the same request for information in several Facebook groups. The general consensus was that the bike must have been exported when Dad sold it in 2001 as the last V5c was issued in 1996 - at a time when Dad would have owned the bike.

I assumed that the bike would have found its way to America and I would never find it.

On Tuesday morning this week, I had the urge to check the forum, something which I would not normally do at that time in the morning. I discovered a message from Martin, who professed to own a bike with the registration JYF 27, which was in bits in his barn.

A few messages and phone calls later and the deal was done. I am pleased to say that the bike has been bought by me and is sitting in the garage.

This bike was my introduction to Ariels, I went to my first rallies in the sidecar, and it is the first geared motorcycle I learned to ride. I used it to go and visit friends before I had a driving licence, and I even rode it to school on at least one occasion in order to sit my A-level exams.

To say that I am pleased that I have the bike back would be an understatement.

It will possibly take a couple of weekends to get her up and running again...

British Motorcycling Federation Rally Grand Cavalcade of Clubs, probably 1990. Note the AOMCC badge just about visible on the breast pocket of Rob's overalls.

I'm jealous, Paul. My son, Chris, had trials bikes from the age of 8. He had a road bike at 16 but never took his test and now has no interest.
