Wheel Bearings 4040-27

Post by paul.wirdnam »

Anyone know where I can get some of these taper roller wheel bearings from? Drags currently out-of-stock :( ...and no idea when back in...

OD 1.750, ID 0.562, W 0.562 (inches)

I was hoping to buy some standard taper rollers, and perhaps sleeve the ID and add shoulder, but there is nothing out there with 1.750 OD.

Thanks

Paul

Paul, nearest list is a 30302, 15x42x15.4,sleeve od and id .No listing in Timken cat, anyway obsolete Timken bearings are very expensive, like $200 plus. You can make your own taper bearings for low speed applications, extreme accuracy or finish are not required.Regards John.

Can you use plain roller bearings?

Another alternative is a 30203, 17x40x13.2,allowing thicker sleeves if your lathework is a bit off. Lipped rollers or balls in 17x40x12 are also available as ISO.Regards John.

Thank for your input John; I'll get my digital calipers and Zeuss book out and look at the options. If I sleeve the OD, I'm assuming that will butt up against the step in the hub...and therefore I might need to also machine a small step in the sleeve to stop the bearing potentially pushing all the way into the centre of the hub...or is the hub step big enough to stop the sleeve and bearing?

Mmmm. I've got a couple of SKF catalogues; one dated 1968 and the other 1981. The 1981 one lists a few other possibilities like:

320/22 which has an OD of 44mm which is only 0.45mm under the required OD of 1.75 inches. 8 thou inch shim will take up that and this bearing will sit nicely against the step in the hub. And with an ID of 22mm, plenty of room for an inner sleeve with the required shoulder. It has the added advantage that its width of 15mm is close to the original bearing.

They seem readily available on eBay and have similar load characteristics to 30302 etc, so can anyone see a problem with this one :?:

Should be ok.Probably best to use a long Starret feeler strip, which will be hardened, and some loctite to hold it all in.You might get the original bearing from Ransome and Marles, they have a web list, and probably made the original bearing.Would be pricey though.Regards John.

Were Drags cheaper (when they had stock)?

Be interested in what you end up doing. For my education - Any reason why they have to be taper roller bearings? The later wheels were ball bearings (I think)...
