Securing gearbox filler screw.

Post by jj.palmer »

Whilst checking the bike over prior to winter storage I noticed that the gearbox filler screw was loose, fortunately I had not lost it. Have always been concerned about tightening the screw as it is a fine thread and could easily be stripped, particularly, that in the gearbox, if overtightened.

To avoid it happening again I have now secured it in place by fitting an aluminium disc to the kick start shaft and locking wire thru' a hole in the disc to holes in the filler screw, see pics.

hi i use a dowty washer o a o'ring on my level - filler plug, your idea is is very good if the thread is not very good, on one my Ariels i recoiled the plug thread in the kickstart casing that has made the thread a lot stronger, and you can put a little bit of silicone on the plug thread to stop it undoing

More useful tips that I'll try and turn into a 'HowTo' for the website members' doc repository, when I get some free time.
As noted by another contributor, after a year or two things posted in forum threads can too easily go unnoticed.

Thanks guys.

Simon, a tip for when drilling cross holes for wire locking is to first drill a hole into the top of the screw, this gives a clean break out of the cross hole drill and thus avoids drill breakage, particularly of small diameter drills, see sketch.
