Moments like this make it all worthwhile. The first time my '54 VH500 has run since I bought the engine in bits.
Still some way to go but at least I know it runs.

The video certainly works here as well. The bike sounds fine, but the finish on the petrol tank needs some work, particularly the gold lining!
The next step is to finish the bike, then run it enough to iron out the various snags, then go on and try your best to wear it out! The last bit is the best.

I have a sound tank but the paint needs some work. Also, my lawnmower will need its tank back by the Spring.
I was pleased that the ignition timing was just about right first go but there does not seem to be much range in the mag lever between minimum and maximum advance. Perhaps there is enough as the engine runs and revs fine.
I still have a number of items to buy such as exhaust pipe, silencer, wiring harness, battery, regulator/rectifier, rear chain, horn, horn push, rear light, rear light switch, footrest rubbers, rear shocks, chain guard, etc., so I hope Santa can carry that lot.

Hi Dennis,
What great progress, always nice when you fire them up for the first time.
On your list of stuff required, make sure you get a regulator - you don’t need a regulator/rectifier as the dynamo works in DC, you only need it to regulate the voltage (unless you’ve upgraded to an alternator?). I can highly recommend the AO regulators available from Paul Goff among others.

Good point about the regulator Rob, I have only had alternator bikes previously so I did not consider what I needed for a dynamo. Actually I have not got around to thinking about the wiring and electrical items yet as getting the engine running was my priority. I have 'motored' the dynamo since fitting a new field coil and armature and reconditioning the dynamo generally so I am hopeful that the dynamo works.
