After removing engine for overhaul ( by the manhandling method ) I looked for a more friendly way two people could reinstall it in a more controlled way. This is how we handled the engine and it went in without a hitch.

Some people enjoy a challenge. I'd like to start off with a brand new one rather than venture into the unknown too far.. I prefer the lighter trials type bikes these days .Nev

Hi
Lifting by the 'broom handles' will put a lot of strain on the upper exhaust flange studs and risk cracking the rocker box - not something I'd risk.
Regards Mick

hi i do not think you will damage the studs or the head flange i lift car engines on the inlet and exhaust studs witch are the same size studs and the engines are a lot heavier for years with no problems

Re: Square four engine handling
I thought the wooden gate handling was pretty a pretty good reply. Thanks for the smile. As for leaping into something without any thought Idont do that.To decide to use the wood dowel rod to aid in engine install I studied the head around top exhaust studs that would carry the weight.Plenty of meat there to carry 25 lbs (11.34 kg )Engine total weight as installed was 104 lbs. (47 kg ) divided by 4 = 25 lbs or 11.34 kg.I would be willing to bet one stud would handle 104 lbs by itself.
Will be starting engine this week and will post a novel way to install the distributor, set the ignition timing with a dial back timing light and a look at my inhouse built distributor and electronic control.
