primary chain trouble VH 500,

Post by ralfpenkert »

This happened a few weeks ago.
A rattling noise made me curious.
Opened the primary case and saw a lot of rolls broken.
Me lucky.
It was still running,

Are they the rollers from the centre of the chainwheel?

Bits of broken roller from the primary chain. I've had one go like that, mine wasn't rattling - I think I might have found it when I was looking for something else. (Long while back, when the bike was the daily driver....)

Ralf , that looks like a split roller chain , In the past I have returned chains with spit rollers even a cam-chain , Its asking for trouble using them , it looks like you have got away with it lightly

I’ve known similar problems when people use industrial chains.

My local bearing supplier used to sell me this type of chain, which is far cheaper than an IWIS or similar but not up to the job. I only use top quality from the chain man these days.

Hi

From the last image it's possible to see the rollers have fractured at two points, ruling out a split roller chain. It's more likely the result of poor quality materially or dimensionally - say a big 'thank-you' under your breath because you got away lightly and buy a Reynolds replacement.

Thanks for comments.
I got this replacement,1/1" x 5/16", 73 links, roller chain, looks like Iwis.
Simply over the counter. A specialty store for chains and sprockets.
Will this one do it?

IWIS chains have a good reputation. I am using them on all my Ariels after I had similar broken roller like you.
