Racing photos

Post by TonyBaxter »

Hi all, just wondered if anyone has, or knows where on the 'net, are early post war pictures of motorcycle road racing. Especially pictures of Ariels. I would have thought that as Ariel were quite quick off the mark with telescopic forks, that there would have been a few raced. I know Triumph singles, T70 and L2/1 were popular with the addition of tele forks, usually nicked off a wartime Matchless, but I can't seem to find much on Ariels.
Cheers, Tony.

postwar, Ariels where mostly used in scrambling or grasstrack, apart from the two strokes as we know.

Hi Vincent, yes I have seen plenty of those pictures, strange that more weren't used for road racing though.

Pre war Ariels were more competetive at the time. They used to be called the poor man's JAP. Responds well to tuning for clubman events. The open valve heads cooled better and the later bikes had no more power and more weight. When BSA took over they put the development into Gold star BSA's. The later VCH models reverted to cast flywheels Nev.

Great photos and info chaps. My friend Geoff Brandon used to ride his 500 girder forked Ariel in vintage racing in the eighties. The bike is currently displayed in Brooklands museum.
