Singles breather elbow ball bearing

I have 1954 VH500 and the breather elbow (2073C-41) came without a ball bearing. Does anyone know the size of ball bearing required and how is it held in the elbow?

There is a very thin split pin (or wire similar size) that should fit through a hole drilled in the theaded part of the elbow , you will need to file the pin so it does not obstruct the thread. I think the ball is around 3/16" (don't have one to compare), but there is some thought that the ball is not needed, as it will hinder the breather action, especially if there is no crancase breather fitted, as in earlier singles. You would still need the pipe that attaches to the elbow.

Pete,
Many thanks for your advice. Interestingly, I have two timing cases with elbows still attached and neither has a ball bearing inside so perhaps the previous owners didn't think a ball bearing was necessary either!

The pre 1941 versions didn't have the ball valve, perhaps your cases are old

Perhaps so but both elbows have the holes for the split pin if that is relevant.

It is, Ariel didn't bother putting the pin in when they didn't fit the ball. I have wondered how effective the breather is when the aperture is reduced by the diameter of the ball.
