Colt oil pump

Post by stevewright »

Hi all.

Anyone got any info on removing the oil pump drive shaft from the casing, and oil pump reconditioning/ flow rate. For a Colt.?

Many thanks.

You need to remove the pump drive retaining pin, and that means taking off the timing cover. You also need to remove the oil pump itself.

Go halfway down to “Chapter 7”. It’s actually for a BSA C12 but it applies to a Colt as well. You don’t need to remove the timing gear, which is done in the tutorial as it is a full strip down.

Flow rate of the pump is enough to feed the roller big end, and return the oil to the tank, with enough pressure to feed the rockers too. These bikes never had an oil pressure gauge fitted. It either works or it doesn’t, if you are worried about it then get it reconditioned.

The problem with these pumps is that the metal used to make the bodies is a zinc alloy that has the unfortunate tendency to swell and crack with time. As Paul says you don't need anything special pump wise in a roller bearing engine but new or reconditioned ones are available. The recon ones only use the old gears, all else is new.
