Loose gearbox main shaft nut

Post by eadriclloyd »

Whilst riding my Arrow this morning the free play on the clutch lever increased from approx 1/16" to 1/4" within a mile or so.
Removing the primary chain case cover revealed that there was significant clutch assembly axial movement.
Removing the kick starter case cover revealed that the nut on the main shaft was loose.
A new tab washer, under the main shaft nut, was fitted when the engine was built 4000 miles ago.
Has anyone experienced this problem or have any suggestions on how to prevent it happening again?
Thanks, Eddie Lloyd

A thread sealant such as Loctite (other brands are available) and/or doing it up tight, say 40 ft/lbs. This is not an unusual problem on all GB 'boxes, fortunately a fairly easy fix at the roadside

Roger,

Thanks for the advice. I have taken your advice and also wire locked the clutch spring nuts together, for good measure.
