Thanks Mick and Nev for your input and advice. No way would I put knackered parts back together! Far too much respect for the machine to do that. Replacement used shaft is on the way from Geoff the club gearbox man. Hopefully that will make a difference, If not I'll look for a new shaft, or grinding...
