Paul, had similar problems on my SQ4 MkI and II. Making it short, I think the oil was the problem. I'm using 20/50 as recommendet but different makes having a different point of burning (flammpunkt in german). If the oil gets too hot - and some places in a SQ4 engine are very hot as we know it burns...

Important is to empty the floatchamber before leaving the bike for a while. In these small compartment the volatile components disappears much quicker than in a big pertol tank. Good is to leave the tank nearly full. It is tested that for longer storage E10 is better than petrol with lower methanol ...

Since many years and mls my MKI is using valveguide seals from Volvo - Teflon(white) . They withstand the heat and working very well.
