Re:

If you dress that up with a thread file it will still be ok. You haven't lost the major part of the thread strength. Have a good fitting nut of good metal and it will pull up fine. Nev Good news.....I was considering that the 'groove' I cut it could be TIG welded and then the threads re-cut, what d...

Re: crankpin removal

Chris, Unfortunately I had to cut one of the crankpin nuts off and i cut into the thread so i think I have to go for a new crankpin :( http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t544/Alan-Moore/Ariel/IMG_1390_zpsecaaa4c6.jpg I have also found what looks like a crack across the conrod so its all turning int...

Re: crankpin removal

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Flywheels are now split. Crank pin surface looks OK but half the rod eye bearing surface is badly pitted so it looks like i am in for a new big end :( The 'bearing is a 'hoffman' and the cage appears to be brass rather than 'alloy'....... Out of interest the roller...

Re: VH crankpin securing nuts

Nev...Thanks for taking the time to reply. Although the thread has a number of views unfortunately to date no-one else could help. Anyhow.....eventually got one undone having applied a bit of heat and attacked it with a five foot extension bar. Second one would not give in...it actually split the 3/...

VH crankpin securing nuts

Please can some one confirm whether or not these nuts are right or left hand thread.

The manaul appears to say right hand. I have tried an air impact gun and a two foot bar but they show no signs of moving.

Any tips much appreciated.

Thanks Alan

Re: crankpin removal

David, Many thanks. The bike has been standing since 1963 and I have some light corrosion on the flywheels so I will split it and check the bearing. I take it two lengths of square bar between the flywheels close to each side of the rod will give the best support ? Lastly, which side should be press...

Re: crankpin removal

David, Thanks for that. The manual quotes 4 to 5 thou up and down as 'permissible' but over that renew and .001 max for a new bigend. Therefore is mine possibly still 'useable' ? Re side to side it says 10 to 12 thou side float max and no more than 1/8 inch at the small end...but you say side play i...

crankpin removal

Hi, Have just joined the AOMCC and am in the process of restoring a 1939 500 redhunter. I have the polished steel crank assembly out and using a dial gauge there is 2 thou of an inch up and down play in the big end. However, there appears to be a lot of side to side play, which measures about 18 tho...
