The 57t drive wheel on the magneto is normally fibre, with a matching 22t steel wheel on the dynamo. However, I have a steel magneto drive wheel which then needs a fibre wheel on the dynamo. I had been told in the past that the function of the slipping clutch was to protect the dynamo in the event of a backfire causing a violent reversal of the dynamo rotation when spinning in one direction, and stripping the fibre wheel drive and also damaging the dynamo. Don't know if this real reason...
