The letter ‘R’ as a testers marking on its own sounds plausible. But two markings, ‘R’ and ‘O’ on one set of (matched) crank cases again makes me wonder…

A further though: Both CH and CE prefixes applied to all 500s - does the 'R' denote a roller bearing bottom end rather than a ball bearing. My cases certainly has rollers and steel flywheels. Hello Will, interesting! I’am quite sure this stamping is a genuine Ariel one. The size and form of the ‘R’ is the exactly same as on my 1940 VG cases. But what does it stand for?

On the drive side of the crank cases these are stamped with a ‘R’. Is there reason for this? Rigid frame? Any explanation?

I’am busy with overhauling a 1940 VG engine and found a ‘G’ stamped between the pusrod holes. Does someone have a clue?

It looks that those two holes are quite common. Reason still unknown… I saw these two KH cilinder heads on the website of ebay.uk on offer and bearing the same holes…
