Re: 1930 LF

To check the spark. 1/4" at not a lot of speed would be enough if it's a dense spark and no arcing at the Points. Till you have a good magneto you don't have a bike you can use. Once they are right they are good for about 15 years. Old coils might go OK for a day ride but will leak stuff that l...

Mines as the one above.51 with orig Matching numbers (if that means much) it's a runner and I've had it for ages. RIGID frame. Maybe the Anstey framed bikes are a different toolbox. Nev

Re: Ariel ng 1936/Carburettor Enquiries

The Jet BLOCK has to be a good fit in the Main body of the carb idle passages near the Intake and there are 2 types which do NOT interchange. The earlier one has a lot of holes and the idle screw (mixture) with the little spring on it, when removed you can see right through. It's not pluggedonthe ot...

Re: 1930 LF

John you have the dynamo running at about engine speed. That is slower than desired. 3 brush dynamos were common in cars and bikes till just before the WW2 but US stuff went for longer. Overcharging the Battery is a common problem causing corrosion around the battery area and reduced battery life. w...

Re: Changing oil with an anti-draindown valve fitted

Sludge settles in the bottom of the oil tank so I mostly remove it and shake some Kero with roofing nuts in it to dislodge the sludge . Hose out with water under pressure and dry with a hair dryer. Purging the oil lines is much less important. Plain bearing motors need a good oil filter and cranksha...

Re: Balancing individual steel flywheels

Mauled up tapers do not wear evenly. and will often settle to a worse position in use which will cause strain on the cases and vibration as well as timing gear whine. Unless you're racing it the iron wheels will be fine cheaper and easier to get. The crankpin in them is tapered and the rod eye bush ...

Re: Balancing individual steel flywheels

Sorry to say so but that taper is a real mess I wouldn't re use the main shaft either and unless you are careful the shaft will go further into the taper and the nut will bottom on the thread.. BIG angst. Nev

Re: HS Replica

I think you'd be flat out getting a good alloy barrel.. The Velocette 500's went back to iron as did the 500 twin ARIELS. Just having a good alloy head will reduce detonation but they need a complete redesign with a shallower combustion chamber and a bigger inlet than exhaust valve and properly flow...
