Re: Square Four 1955 onwards - Dynamo removal and inspection
Will, I have carried out the flashing / repolarization treatment as you suggested. Fired up and now I am a little confused on what I am seeing. Get the engine revs right and I am showing zero on the ammeter. Above or below that and the ammeter is oscillating between charge and discharge First of all...

Re: Ariel engine numbering system
Agree a huge surprise. Unfortunately I have a continuation log book so can't update on that. SW6 is 5 miles away from Balham so its a least in the right area, maybe a deal was struck at the time.

Changes well I just fitted an DVR2 electronic regulator kit, should have run the bike up first with the original regulator fitted but didn't as it did work. Ive treble ...

Ariel engine numbering system
Ariel engine crankcase designation numbers were updated most years of manufacture, to quote a couple VH 1955 LC, 1956 MB and so on.
During a discussion I was advised that the engine serial numbers all started at 100.
Is this a myth or reality?

Square Four 1955 onwards - Dynamo removal and inspection
Hi My dynamo is in need of an overhaul as there's no charge. I would like to inspect clean / replace the brushes first of all, but I cannot see anyway of removing the chrome end cover without removing the primary chaincase to gain access. Am I missing something here? Drags charging notes suggest its...

Re: VG big end and flywheel assembly
Attached pics of the flywheel numbers which are far from clear. Educated guesses of what else it could be? VG5.jpg VG6.jpg VG7.jpg Also close ups of the bearing pins and their engagement in the flywheels which are between 4 / 5 mm 3/16 inch. VG8.jpg VG9.jpg Couple of pointers here. I have the 1 15/1...

Re: VG big end and flywheel assembly
John, they are steel not cast iron as confirmed when the O/ diameters were skimmed. Secondly their designation A7 / 343S will suggest the period 1933 / 1935 a period of supply of steel flywheels. That,s why I mentioned the relaxation of the taper fit. Sounds like youve done these before - what clear...
