Ariel square 4 maintenance

Hi All its over 10 years since I restored my MK1 square 4, and apart from when some idiot knocked me off the bike in 2015 causing both damage to me and the bike, the machine has been used regularly and has now over 8000 miles on the clock. Overall, the bike is always easy to start on just a couple o...

Re: Ariel square 4 misfire

Well well well, the plot thickens! After more investigation of the ignition system I have worked out the actual problem. Fake NGK spark plugs. I had replaced my last set when I serviced the bike less than 100 miles ago and all looked/worked fine. The problem gradually became apparent with engine mis...

Re: Ariel square 4 misfire

The mystery may be solved! Just did some tests on the ignition this morning. Coil seems okay but will recheck when hot. Opened up the plugs a bit to 25 thou. What I then noticed was the left hand plugs have a far better spark than the right hand plugs where the spark is weaker. Additionally the righ...

Re: Ariel square 4 misfire

Simes, thanks for the reply. Will have to check if it gets hot next time I take it for a run. The coil lives behind the battery case so getting a grip of it isn't so easy unless I unbolt the battery strap All connections on leads are good , just a bit of oxidisation on the coil lead terminal on the ...

Ariel square 4 misfire

Hi all I'm after a bit of advice I have covered well over 7 thousand miles since I restored my 1951 square 4, and like most owners I have had the odd carb problem, or more usual - misfires caused by points, or condenser, carbon in the dist cap etc, but the latest misfire is proving hard to eliminate...

Re: Square 4 Accuspark fitted

Hi Allen On your last to me - I simply ordered a DK4 ignition set for a + earth. I dont think CW OR CCW will affect its operation and this refers more to the rotor arm and possibly advance / retard unit. I have a small amount of wear on the distributor spindle and electronic ignition overcomes this ...

Re: Square 4 Accuspark fitted

Allen
I simply went by the distributer type as opposed to a particular vehicle. The only requirement is to identify that its a Bakelite base as opposed to a metal base. I ordered my one on ebay around new year.

Square 4 Accuspark fitted

Hi All with the warmer weather I decided to fit my Accuspark electronic ignition to my Mk1 .square 4 Really simple process with only adapting the base plate to clear the Advance retard weights which added time to the conversion. The bike fired up 1st kick and ran well. I've slowly advanced the distr...

Any accuspark experts out there?

Hi all Just thought id do an upgrade on my 1952 Ariel square 4 electrics and replace the points with an accuspark ignition system. I thought this would be straightforward enough, but when I removed the points baseplate and all the gubbins and replaced it with the new accuspark one, it immediately be...
