I am going through similar starting problems that you appear to have found. Has it started yet?

Hi Stu. Sorry for the tardy response time! Yes, I have resolved the problems and the engine starts & runs well now. Do you need any info?

Arrow ignition switch

A silly question but, on a '61 Arrow, which way should the ignition switch be turned for 'normal' operation? It is not marked ign/emg, as many models are, and the manual gives no info on this.

Ta Chaps!

Re: Worn crank case seals

Thanks, Ivor. I have been out of action for a while but have, today, resumed work on the job. Here's a brief summary... Having pressurised the crankcases, I discovered significant leakage from the collar located on the RH mainshaft. (Perversely, the crankcase seal runs on its OD, but there is no sea...

Re: Arrow gearbox neutral plunger parts sought

Clive i am also rebuilding an arrow gearbox at the moment and inherited three used gearboxes all with outer covers and plungers and springs. The plungers are 1/2” springs 7/10”. I was going to sell my spare parts following my rebuild but if you are interested send me a private message. Stu, sorry f...

Re: Worn crank case seals

Update. In order to test for crankcase leakage I made up and fitted the following items... * A pair of rubber-faced discs to plug the exhaust ports (I used the standard exhaust roses to compress and retain them) * A blanking plate (with an 'o' ring groove) for the carb flange. I fitted, to this, a s...

Re: Worn crank case seals

Ahh, having reviewed my test method, I see a flaw in my reasoning. The crankcases won't pessurise if the inlet Is left open to atmosphere. Whoops!

Re: Bike stands

I have an ABBA stand which I use for my 'modernish' Aprilia. Not sure of the type you are considering but mine will function only by engaging a spigot into each each side of a hollow swing arm.

Re: Worn crank case seals

Well, in an effort to investigate the possibility of leaking seals, and before resorting to a more extensive mechanical exercise, I devised a rather unscientific approach as follows... I stripped down both alternator and primary sides, as far as poss, to reveal the crankcase 'doors' then blocked off...

Re: Worn crank case seals

Ok, it looks like I shall have to strip the engine back down to investigate further. I'll report back when/if I discover the cause...
