But enough to be encouraged.

Re: Balancing individual steel flywheels

You did see where I was able to get the runout down to 0.004" at the flywheel edge? Is that too much? That is with the nut at about 120ft/lbs. 0.004" is equivalent to the timing side wheel and approximately the roughness of the flywheel edge and the precision of my current fixture. The sha...

Re: Balancing individual steel flywheels

Thank you Paul. I do have a piece of 1" stock so may do that. Trying to get at the balance showed the drive side flywheel was too wobbly so forced to press that side apart. Should have expected... 20240315_113252.jpg The appeared to be a bit of shim in the keyway and the nut was distressed so p...

Re: Balancing individual steel flywheels

Thanks for the help guys. Yes, the flywheels came to me as a set so should be a matched set. Roger, get well soon! Alan, I do have an old pin that I could shave down - great idea! Thanks Nev. It looks like both flywheels will end up with 4 factory-like balancing holes which seems like a lot - just g...

Re: Balancing individual steel flywheels

The holes are now filled and I re-drilled 3 holes where there was evidence of factory holes. There was evidence of one factory balance hole on either side of the oil purifier plug so balance should now be close, but it's not so something is fishy... I built a little roller fixture for the 1/2 crank ...

Re: Magneto Magnet strength ?

Found my notes on the performance before and after recharging the magnet. Before recharging, magnetic resistance to rotation was very weak – barely noticeable. Using a homemade 3 point spark tester with a 5mm gap the mag sparked about 2/3 the time at 130 rpm. Unfortunately I forgot to note if it was...

Re: Magneto Magnet strength ?

What this means is the "north" end of a compass needle actually is a little N magnet, since it points toward the pole above Finland that is magnetically south. Where a Lucas manual shows a "N" and "S" pole, those are to be taken as the poles that will attract the ends ...

Re: Magneto Magnet strength ?

First I built a box for the electromagnet with holes for the poles. This also shows an experimental setup with 4 capacitors in series. At this time I only had a 12v battery charger to charge them so it was still pretty safe. 20230924_190323~2.jpg This shows the capacitor box. The cloth covered wire ...
