Re: New head gasket for a mark ii square four

Hello Simes,
That is front left which I thought was No.4, furthest away from the pump. Previous posts suggests this is No.3.
They all had a considerable build up, but this one was the worst.

Re: New head gasket for a mark ii square four

Hello Paul, Only 3,500 but I'm sure it has done far more than that. I don't know the history of the bike, but the bores are on standard, the oil in the tank was clean and everything generally looked good - until the sludge traps were removed. Good luck with it, sounds like you have found a good bike...

Re: New head gasket for a mark ii square four

I was pleased I took this advice, my square had been standing unused for years and fortunately I made no attempt to start it. The photo shows one of the sludge traps, the gunge had completely blocked the oil feed to the big end journal.

Re: 4G Main bearing grub screws

Thank you Paul, I will follow your advice. Crankshaft oilways have been cleaned. Fortunately no attempt to start the engine was made as they were solid with crud. New rods fitted too.

4G Main bearing grub screws

Hi all, I have recently bought a 1946 4G that requires an engine rebuild. I have had the original main bearings white metaled and a slave assembly of the crankcase suggests it is a good job. Unfortunately, I think the main bearings have been replaced with no consideration of the grub screw hole. I g...

Perhaps something to do with the pre-65 trials held in Mons, Belgium.

Re: Removing tele forks 57 FH

Hi Duncan In a word, yes. Earlier models have their advantages! Once nacelle, top fork nuts, mudguard and wheel are removed, slacken the lower headstock pinch bolt and the fork leg will come out. If it doesn't, tap a wedge into the split in the lower headstock and tap from the top if necessary. I wo...

Seems a bit odd to me, but a solution may be to fit a zener diode, say 5.6V in series with the LED. This way, the voltage across the main beam filament would have to rise above 5.6V for any current flow. Of course, that would reduce the brightness of the LED but since it is lighting when on dip it s...

Hi Charlie, I reckon very tight, but not enough to strip the threads! The swinging arm should only move due to the flexibility of the rubber in the bushes so it has to be tight enough to clamp the bush inners to the frame and centre spacer to remove movement. Therefore, tighten them with the swingin...
