Re: Square 4 Conrod Side Play

Hi All My MK1 has .022” total clearance. The cranks were reground by a previous owner to .030” under and the radii of the journals and mains on the timing side were very good. The journal size was spot on for new shells. As you say the shells themselves are much narrower than the rods are and I figu...

Re: Cush drive Mk1 how oes it fit

Hi all, Careful with the mk1 sprocket (mine is 1949 build sold in 1950) and the coupling gear cover clearance. Use plasticine to test the fit. I rebanded a front sprocket and thought I had enough clearance after welding. I found that there wasn’t and the sprocket actually swaged the raised portion o...

41B1D20F-36FB-472E-A1A0-1477C7973F96.jpeg Hi all, Apart from the color of the script on a Mk1 timing case (mine appears to be a maroon) has anyone wondered as to why the script has both upper and lower case letters in it? I may have missed past conversations about the reasons. Probably many convers...

Re: One very fast Ariel

A correction on cam timing on my race cam. I checked my cam timing record and it was 95 degrees overlap not 55 degrees. This is the bike in its final form with road registration. It had lots of power and it did handle well. Regards Dennis

Re: One very fast Ariel

Hi all, I raced against that bike and another that Kieth Corish built for his sons to race in the mid to late 80's. I think it was Tony Gill of Daytona fame on the Kooistra honda who also at that time raced the faster of the two bikes as well. I was racing a standard featherbed framed red hunter tha...

Re: Mk1 Sq 4 Carb

Hi all, Four years ago I was fortunate enough to pick up a NOS Solex 26 AHD at Bendigo swap meet for $60 AU. The carburettor was originally off a BSA 430 cc stationary engine. I did have to swap the choke tube and jets from my old carburettor to the new one. The choke tube on the BSA is 23mm so eith...

Re: Square four Conrod eye to eye centre distance.

Hi all, With a 75mm stroke and David's dimension of 150.25 for the con rod, 8 degrees BTDC translates to .456 mm. Full advance at 38 degrees translates to 9.73 mm BTDC. The program is Torqsoft piston position calculation tool. Google it. It is good fun to play with different angles and piston positi...

Re: Square four Conrod eye to eye centre distance.

Hi, I d agree the dead stop method is the most accurate for TDC and I do have one from a modified plug for that that purpose. A thought has just occurred to me that if I was to use the dead stop in cylinder no 3 and use the dial gauge in cylinder no 1 to split the difference for the TDC would that w...

Re: Square four Conrod eye to eye centre distance.

Hi and thank you for the replies. Perhaps I should have worded my original enquiry better to make it clearer. I use the aforementioned TorqueSoft - Piston Position - Calculation tool to determine the timing on the engines that I know the centre to centre distance of the Conrod. Once I have the corre...

Square four Conrod eye to eye centre distance.

Hi, Dennis calling, I have a 1950 Mk1 four and I have recently converted to 12 volts and an Accuspark electronic ignition. (Kit no 39) the TorqueSoft program on the net requires the distance between the big and little end centre to centre. Can anyone please advise what the dimension is? ( I didn't m...
