Re: Singles camshaft nut

I had no choice. Sunday night it was leave it in the ditch and get home to avoid hypothermia. I called my insurer 1st thing Monday, they said don't worry, we're arranging to get it recovered, which they couldn't do that day. If the recovery guy had gone to the right location Tuesday morning, it was ...

Re: Singles camshaft nut

Spare plates to make clutch locking tool arrived from Paul. Many thanks. Since taking the XSR 700 Yam bog snorkling on Sunday evening, the saga has continued. Before the recovery firm could get to it, some thieving ratbag removed the bike from the ditch. It took the insurance a while to get their he...

Re: Singles camshaft nut

Hi Bob,
You were not far from where we live now. I grew up in Keynsham.
I've just heard from the insurance, and RAC are going to recover it tomorrow on their behalf. It will be assesed, but they think that if water has got into the engine unit, it'll be a write off.

Re: Singles camshaft nut

I hang out with the East Devon section. I think I'll take the AA's option. Mainly because it will be no simple job to get it out. Just getting a strap on it to pull or lift on will need chest waders at least. And I can sit at home in the warm waiting until they are well on their way, rather than wai...

Re: Singles camshaft nut

Pity, that's not an unreasonable price. However, the cam chest gasket renewal is no longer a priority due to unforseen circumstances. As in, I did not forsee that this evening I foolishly cast my daily ride, a 700 Yam, into a Somerset levels drainage ditch. Silence in the back row please! and no rude...

Re: Singles camshaft nut

Thanks guys. I don't have an impact gun. Not sure how much use it would get. Though I suppose once you have one, applications soon appear. More leverage with an extention tube on a T bar with a good fitting socket is what I'll try tomorrow, but as I do not have any spare clutch plates, I'm taking up...

Singles camshaft nut

Checking to make sure that the camshaft nut on singles is a R/H thread. I see a lot of posts about the camshaft nut on Sq.4s being L/H but nothing about singles, or about the nut being difficult to loosen. I am temporairly thwarted, as my 1/2" socket set is elsewhere and I have only large open ...

Just succeeded in shifting one of the accessible screws. 1.1/4" as I suspected.

timing chest screw sizes

I think I'm on the track of the last (for the time being) significant oil leak on my '52 VH500. From the bottom of what I would call the timing chest (with the cam inside). The slot head screws show evidence of determined tightening, so when the bike last ran around 1960, the prevous owner was tryin...
