Square 4 rods

Hello, I am about to start rebuilding my 57 S4, been delayed for over a year due to work but finally getting started. Does anyone have any information on the replacement con rods that were to be manufactured? I was put on a waiting list some time ago but no response so far. I want to build the bike ...

Head gasket

Hello all, I am about to start assembling my ‘57 S4 engine, planning ahead and reading up as much as I can. I have the Otto head gaskets, reading the assembly instructions I find the instructions a little ambiguous regarding the initial installation. The instructions are clear for the re-tightening ...

Re: Rod bolts

Thanks, I had already crack checked ( i own a commercial machine shop so no problem to magnaflux the rods and bolts) however there is a variation of up to 0.010” in the lengths of the 8 bolts, the longest being the 2 new bolts, so nothing to use as a comparison. I am at the point where it all looks ...

Rod bolts

Greetings and Happy new year from Manitoba in winter. I am about to assemble my Mk2 Square 4 engine. I have reconditioned the original rods but was unable to find a full set of new bolts. Does anyone have the exact length of the original bolts? I want to measure and check the originals have not stre...

Re: Con Rod bolts

Perhaps I did not explain very well in the first post. I have separated the caps from the rods, what I am stuck on is removing the bolts from just the caps. These appear to be very tight, I have tried the usual gentle persuasion, heated the caps to expand the alloy around the bolts, made a basic too...

Con Rod bolts

Hello all, is there any magical, easy way to remove the rod bolts out of the bearing caps on a 57 S4. I plan to re-size the L/E bearings but the bolts appear to be exceptionally tight, tried the usual mild blows with a plastic hammer, heating the cap, etc, but they all remain firmly in place. The sh...

Square 4 camshaft

Not sure if this would be helpful to many of you, but I thought I would mention it. I am rebuilding a "57 S4, the camshaft was not worn, but it was pitted and unusable. I am based in Manitoba, Canada so some research led me to Shadbolt Cams, in Vancouver, BC <shadboltcams.com> They specialize i...

Re: Front mudguard

Absolutely perfect Mick, exactly what I needed to know. Thank you. Mine is 2" short, obviously would have made it go much faster in the day. Now I can get the English wheel out and roll a section.

Front mudguard

Hello all, I am in the process of rebuilding and assembling my '56 Square 4, the PO had cut down the mudguards presumably as a "go faster" measure and in the name of 70's fashion which is the last time the bike was used. What remains is in good condition so I intend to rebuild it. As it ha...
