I just poke a thin screwdriver in each hole and see how deep it is - main thing is that the screws don't bottom out. Doubles as a check for gunge in the bottom of the hole so I always do this even if I know which screw goes where.

I had a DMW which had a brake light activated by a mercury switch. As you slow down the mercury flows forward and closes the contacts so the brake pedal isn't involved at all. Worked really well and would fit inside the hollowed regulator next to the battery. Available for around £15 or less on Ebay.
