hi keith i would turn the rear wheel round and find the tight spot on the chain then adjust the chain at this point it will be a bit more slack on the loose part of the chain check this is not too loose this should solve the problem of the chain being to tight brian

if you grind down the springs will they be the right spring tension for your use ,you could get springs made if you know the length and load of the spring you may be able to get one made to order i would get the advice of a spring specialist
