Re: Breather tube sizing - MK1
Hi Cam, I don’t remember the size of the tubing I installed, but it was just large enough to fit snugly into the breather hole inside the timing case. I ‘m sure you’ll find a picture in one of my threads. BUT…. If a lot of oil, and not just condensate, is coming out of the breather, then I believe t...

Re: Sq4 MkI- new life
You don't have any ideas as to why my 1937 Square Four intermittently runs perfectly but then develops a serious misfire do you? I would guess something to do with the ignition  Interesting enough, it didn’t occur to me to look at the ignition first, because she started and settled into ...

Re: Sq4 MkI- new life
Good news! The fault was indeed the HT lead which had pulled out of the washer in the distributor cap. Today she ran without problems. Thank you Paul for pointing me in the right direction. I just did a short ride of about 20 kms, and all went well. Kept top speed below 70 km/h and just cruised alon...

Re: Sq4 MkI- new life
I think I may have found the culprit (2nd photo). The metal disc came loose from the lead and was just loose in the distributor cap. What do you think?
Nev, I don’t have any suppression leads - see 1st photograph.

Re: Sq4 MkI- new life
Thanks Paul, I’ll check the distributor to see if I find anything. I don’t have points anymore. I have a Thorspark electronic ignition which replaced the points inside the distributor. But further to Paul’s idea - what happens under load that causes the ignition to fail? I’m trying to understand the...

Re: Sq4 MkI- new life
I removed the Solex when the engine bust, and it was in perfectly working order, and just layed on the counter for a year or so... Sorry, I should have remembered who I was talking to! The lack of power might be valve timing, but that wouldn't get worse. It does sound like it's bogging down. Yes, w...

Re: Sq4 MkI- new life
I have no fuel filter. Petrol hose from the petcock into the Solex. I removed the Solex when the engine bust, and it was in perfectly working order, and just layed on the counter for a year or so. But yes, I might have to take it out, inspect and clean..

Re: Sq4 MkI- new life
Well, I tried my first run, but didn’t get far. Cold start on first kick and she settled to a nice tickover. Rode out of the driveway and changed to 2nd, but the she didn’t seem to have any power and didn’t want to rev up. As soon as I opened up the throttle, the engine wanted to splutter and die. I...

Re: Sq4 MkI- new life
John, I meant the timing case breather of course. Not primary. Just meant one thing and wrote another.
