Sq4 MkI - engine blow up and rebuild
As the riding season draws to an end, I mustered the courage to pull the the Sq4 out of the darkest corner of the garage and start disassembling the engine. I got the head and barrel off, disassembled the primary and timing side, and soon shall be pulling the bottom end off the frame. Here are the f...

Re: Sq4 coupling gear oil seal
I managed to get the seal out intact. I removed the spring first and the seal then came out. I shall post pics of what I find on a separate thread - I survived an engine blow up on a Sq4

Sq4 coupling gear oil seal
Hi everyone, I finally took the Sq4 out of the corner of the shop, and started dismantling the engine. As a recap, my con rod on Nr 3 broke early this year, I believe due to a faulty pressure relief valve. But final analysis is still pending until the engine is apart. I can’t remember what is the pr...

Re: 1954 NH first proper shake down rides
Thanks. I‘ll have a look at the shock absorber as well. Unfortunately it will be a few weeks until I can get back to work on the bike and be able to report back.

Re: Won't start
Have you checked the sparking plug gap as some suggested above? I had something similar on my BSA Sloper which was always a good starter. After a scheduled maintenance it just wouldn‘t want to start, sometimes spitting back through the carb, and finally starting after many kicks. I was checking for ...

1954 Singles Parts List Page 12, Gear cover and fittings. 2073C-41. Elbow union, 90 degree with ball and pin for breather pipe. Trouble is, I don't have one here to look at, all my timing cases being pre war. Are you using running in oil or normal slippery oil? The rings won't run in on slippery oi...

Re: 1954 NH first proper shake down rides
That‘s interesting - I don‘t think my timing breather has any ball in there. I also don‘t see any mention of it on my parts catalogue and I can blow through it into the timing case. The cylinder was rebored and has a new piston (+.030) with new rings, so it could be blow by. I‘ve only ridden it abou...

Re: 1954 NH first proper shake down rides
Here are some videos I took today after a run. One can clearly see how air and oil is being pumped through the magneto/dynamo cover. Also through the threads on the timing breather. I extended the breather pipe with a hose, but didn‘t make any difference.
