Re: 4G Timing Chain Removal etc
Maybe not much help if you don't have one, but an air impact wrench will remove the nuts easily, going against the inertia of the assembled parts.

Re: Where Has This Come From?
Paul, It does appear they revised the assembly in subtle ways between Mk I & II. Part numbers differ for the spring, sliding member and the spring retainer / spring retaining collar. Split pin is only on Mk II, hardened steel washer only on Mk I. My 1952 Mark I came with no washer, although owne...

Re: SQ4 Coil
Bill,
Thanks, very helpful! My current coil is only 1.2 ohms primary. While it throws an admirable spark, I'm concerned about too many amps flowing through the points - so I'll be looking at installing one with higher resistance.

SQ4 Coil
Does anyone know the primary resistance for the original coil fitted to the Square Four? This was Lucas 45016A, model Q6.
Thanks,
Dave

Handlebars - SQ4 Mark I
Hello all, I'm into the later stages of assembling my 1952 Square Four, and installed the handlebars which came with the bike. No problems there, but on fitting the front brake lever I find the cable is aimed right at the side of the alloy cowl holding the speedometer. It's also quite close, so the ...

Yes, I've used the equivalent of these (Powersonic PS-6120 6V 13AH) in the past with success. They're a good fit in the standard battery box, except a bit high - you may need to trim ribs or molding from the inside of the lid, as the battery extends above the edge of the box.

Re: best remedy-lighting
Nev, I've had good luck on my AJS 18S with the Power-Sonic PS-682-F1 (6V 9AH). It will fit into a hollowed or replica standard Exide battery shell. The bike runs an E3L dynamo, electronic regulator and a 35W halogen headlamp. I normally ride with the headlamp on, for visibility in daylight, and the ...

Re: SQ4 Spark Plug Reach
OK, Simes is right - a Lodge CN is specified in the factory "Owners Guide 1952-53" (an odd publication, given that '52 engines were Mark I and '53 were Mark II). A CN plug is indeed 1/2" reach; so a modern equivalent like the NGK B6HS should be right for the Mark I. The longer plugs a...

SQ4 Spark Plug Reach
Hello all, I'm assembling my 1952 Square Four after tearing it down completely for restoration and to address any mechanical issues. I'm about ready to install the cylinder head, and notice that it has bronze inserts for the spark plugs. Moreover, they have a depth of exactly 1/2 inch. Now the owner...
