Re: Ariel for sale in Sweden

It's an interesting collection of bits and it may well have had the original frame swapped because of damage. The front tank mountings don't seem to have the rubbers in the correct place and there is a cable abutment on the rear brake plate but it does have the longer brake arm without which the bra...

Re: square 4 spedoo mounting bracket

The speedo clip is 3"1/2 long by 9/16" wide and 16swg with the ends radiused at 1"3/4 to suit the curve of the attachments in the top yoke. The length can be a little shorter but any longer will jam in the attachments. Any wider may need a rebate filing to clear the speedo cable. The ...

Re: square 4 spedoo mounting bracket

The clip is 5213-51 and is as you suggest a flat strip with two holes to accommodate the mounting studs on the speedo. The strip is approximately 3" long and 1/2" wide with the short sides should be slightly radiused to suit the inside of the top yoke. For what it's worth here is a link to...

Re: Ariel for sale in Sweden

That's a very early engine number but the gearbox date seems a little late in comparison. The oi tank looks right and the TT would have had a huge, knee-cracking pancake filter. The front mudguard stay is right for an early HS too. As Simon says the real incongruity is the frame with a front sidecar...

Re: Earles forked Ariel

As I remember the discussion that followed the 'unveiling' of the orange KHA there was considerable scepticism over the claimed provenance of the bike. The bike in the Cheval article is an interesting collection of parts. With the knobbly tyres and lights I wonder if it was a privateer's ISDT-type m...

Re: MK1 sq 4 con rod nuts torque setting

I'd assumed for some reason you were fitting new, club rods.

It will be well worthwhile fitting new rods if there is any doubt about the ones
currently fitted. If one lets go it will wreck the engine.

Whilst still in preaching mode, the oil ways ought to be 'clinically clean' too.

Re: Solex carburettor

The one shown in Pete's picture - the 'real thing' - can jam in the cable attachment at the butterfly end and allow the butterfly to remain partly open, another good reason for relocating the ignition switch in the headlamp where it is less difficult to reach. I've threaded a small washer over the n...

Re: Solex carburettor

I've had the butterfly in the Solex freeze in the part-open position. I survived and moved the
ignition switch from its inaccessible position under the seat and set it up in the headlamp
where it remains to this day.
