Bugger, double checked & to reduce the mainshaft shoulder enough for the sprocket to pass over would leave barely anything for the thrust washer to seat against, its just too marginal. You could safely take enough off to allow the nut to clear, but obviously the sprocket spline minor diameter is...

The fixed shoulder on the mainshaft doesn't itself act as thrust face against the clutch as its o/d is too small ( the clutch can pass freely over it ). There is a seperate loose thrust washer with a larger o/d that butts against it. (3394-36). Having looked at it again, I'm sure its feasible to red...

BA gearbox sprocket removal mod?

Evening all ( for those of us in the correct hemisphere ) I've got my BA 'box apart at the moment & was looking at the shoulder on the mainshaft that prevents removal of the sprocket whilst the box is assembled. It seems that the only purpose it serves is to prevent the clutch bearing riding alo...

10 gauge spokes in 8 gauge holes?

Evening Gents I ordered rims & spokes from drags to rebuild my '51 VH500 wheels. My mistake was not noticing that the plated spokes listed for the rear wheel brake side are a longer length & plain 10 gauge, as opposed to the stainless spokes available which are the correct length & 8/10g...

Armours mudguards

Evening all

Any experience of Armours mudguards?
They have front 5"mc9f & rear 6"mc10r ribbed guards listed, £50 each, which may do a job on my '51 VH.
I have the originals but they are really bad !

cheers

Hi Paul Keep up the good work, I'm halfway through rebuilding my '51 VH, mine's been in boxes for nearly 20 yrs! I've always kidded myself it's not in too bad shape, but when it actually comes to recommisioning parts, that's when reality strikes! I thought Stafford was a bit of a dead loss, from my p...

Hi Rob What postcode did you get a refusal on? I'm in DE24. Just renewed my policy for Honda VTR1000 & Husaberg with Carole Nash & checked how much extra to add my VH500 when it's finished, it added about £20 to the premium. I'll most likely sell the Honda when the Ariels ready, the sportsbi...

On the subject of fork oil, any idea what the volume of oil required is? I've seen a figure of around 200cc mentioned for BSA A7, so a 1 litre bottle will be enough from dry ?

Front wheel 19" or 20"

Good evening chaps I'm interested to see what the consensus of opinion is regarding building my VH front wheel with a 19" rim instead of the correct 20". A friend built his with a 19" ostensibly to allow greater choice of tyre, also availability of rim. I can see some merit with this ...

Just stripped my forks today & was wondering if the piece of hemp / jute twine was meant to be there until I saw this thread. On the subject of seal holder removal tools, I made a nice one out of a section of scrap 41mm fork stancion I had lying around, for speed I then ran two short beads of we...
