Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....
Sorry I'm a bit late to the party, but I find my '49 Sq.4 starts with the bi-starter halfway out and with the throttle slightly open. I always give it 4 kicks with the ignition off to get some fuel into the cylinders, then off we go! If I try to start it with the lever fully out it wont go! Old bike...

Re: Wanted SQ4 MK1 Exhaust
Did you get exhausts? I've two from a '49 Mk 1 lying in my garage. Rusty, a bit dented here and there but perfectly usable. Down side is I'm in Scotland!

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!! (Am I going mad?)
This may not be relevant but I had terrible starting/running/idling problems with a Sunbeam S8 which I had restored and fitted with a brand new carb supplied to original spec by Amal. I swapped it out for a friends carb of the same spec and it started and ran perfectly. After much investigation I di...

Re: After a run
Simes, sounds just like mine does! Oil pressure similar too...cant say the same for the electrical output. BTW I have the same ammeter, did you get yours restored if so where? Mine has been blasted out of kilter by the non regulating regulator and wont return to zero. I'd hate to have to loose it. I...

Re: Regulators Ammeters n stuff
All, thanks for the helpful replies. My 6 v. battery is well up showing a 6.25v prior to fitting the regulator. On return from a 17mile run the other day(on the bike silly!) I rechecked it and it was showing 6.28v. I also keep the battery attached to an optimate to keep it healthy. I fitted the regu...

Regulators Ammeters n stuff
All, read with interest the posts concerning electronic regulators. I was having charging issues on my Mk1 Sq.4 . On examining the original mechanical regulator I found the regulator points pitted and not opening completely so and just last week I ordered a 6 volt electronic regulator from Draganfly...

Re: Sq4. Mk 1 Alloy engine valve clearance.
Roger, I recall the circlip you describe, I agree its so thin and tiny it could'nt act as a return spring. Its been a couple of years now but I'm sure I dropped springs and a cup inside each of the cam follower guides before I placed the push rods in. I could be mistaken about this, failing memory a...

Re: Sq4. Mk 1 Alloy engine valve clearance.
Simes, apologies. I should be more specific. If my memory serves the push rods are seated on a spring inside the cam follower guide block which has the dual purpose of keeping the cam follower in touch with the cam and the pushrod in contact with the rocker arm. They are definitely spring loaded as ...

Sq4. Mk 1 Alloy engine valve clearance.
All, this afternoon I decided to get ready for spring so thought I'd tighten the head nuts which in turn led me to address the gap between the rockers and the valve stems. Ok, the manual says 0.001in clearance but accumulated wisdom advises that with an alloy engine fitted with a reground casmshaft ...
